What to expect

Ever wanted to try the pottery wheel? I'm offering these limited availability 1.5hr sessions only for a couple of days during Cornwall Open Studios 2026 as a chance to get hands-on with clay and experience not one, but two different styles of wheel - a traditional Leach kick wheel and a modern electric wheel. Held at my Carbis Bay garden studio, you'll be guided step-by-step through the basics of throwing, from centring the clay to shaping your first forms. With just two people per session, there's plenty of individual support, making it a calm and enjoyable introduction - even if you've never touched clay before. During the session, you will have time to try both wheels and get a feel for their very different rhythms - one powered by your own movement, the other by a steady motor. It is a unique opportunity to experience both the heritage and the modern side of wheel throwing. By the end, you'll choose your favourite piece to keep. I'll glaze and fire it for you, ready to collect or post out after the event.
